This week has been another great one for coaching and helping people to set their own goals. I have found myself looking back on key principles for goals and wanted to share them here. Here are three well known acronyms for goal-setting:
All these qualities are fairly straightforward but it is worth to note:
If a goal is not REALISTIC there is no hope, but if it is not CHALLENGING there is no motivation.
POSITIVE goals are vital so as not to reiterate the negative.
AGREED is about ownership and responsibility – this could be three-way – manager, player and coach/mentor
LEGAL, ETHICAL and ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND – there can be a personal code going on here so best to aim for the highest standards.
UNDERSTOOD is also vital as inaccurate assumptions may distort people’s perception.
